Air Pollution

Water Pollution

Air Pollution: the presence in or introduction into the air of a substance which has harmful or poisonous effects.

Car engines is a source of air pollution. It burns up gasoline and that can add a lot of bad chemicals in the air.

Water pollution begins it ends the same way. When there is too many foreign substances in a body of water, supply of oxygen is cut off. When there is no oxygen the organism will start to die. This then leaves room for anaerobic microorganisms.
(They don't need oxygen to survive)

Water pollution: A body of water becomes polluted when foreign substances damage the water quality, making the water undrinkable and dangerous for organisms to live in.

Sometimes bodies of water can neutralize foreign substances and the water won't be harmed. Although it might not be able to handle all the substances and the water becomes polluted.

Another thing that can cause water pollution would be animal waste, fertilizer, and pesticides. This can end up in waterways and can cause probems.

Pollution can enter bodies of water
in different ways:acid rain, eroded
soil, as runoff containing fertilizers &
pesticides,as chemicals released from
industries, or as sewage and other
wastes from cities and many other towns

Factories/power plants will use water to cool down
their machinery. The water is hot when its released.
"If there isn't enough room for it to disperse, it'll heat up the body of water and cause life to grow faster than normal. Thermals pollution like this can push out native species and leave too many nutrients in the water."

In 1970s laws were passed to cut down on pollution from companies dumping stuff straight out of the water. Runoff from farms and ranches are still a problem.

Although that may be a problem, there are ways this can be fixed. "Plants that treat waste water can purify it before it's released back into rivers and lakes, and researchers are always working on new ways to cut down on water pollution."

Fossil fuels release particles of soot and dust when its burned which can release deadly gases.
(Carbon Dioxide and Sulfur Dioxide)

Power plants, factories, furnaces, stoves heat for homes and offices can pollute the air.

The Ozone layer is really protected from air pollution because of chemicals. Chemicals that have been released thinned it out, making it possible for harmful ultraviolet rays to reach the earth's surface.

Too much of those gases can make people sick. It can make your eyes water, your throat feel dry, permanently damage your lungs and even cause cancer.

Carbon Dioxide and Sulfur Dioxide are green house gases and when there is too much it can contribute to global warming.

Some ways to help cause less air pollution is to ride bikes and walk instead of buses and cars

Acid rain is a result of air pollution. Pollutants in the air can combine with water droplets making it acidic. When it makes contact with the ground of water it can destroy the environment if its too acidic.

Another way to help is by using insulate in homes, so it won't need so much energy to heat and cool.

Pollution can also come from natural sources. Some examples are wildfires, volcanic eruptions, and cow burps. (Cow burps contain a harmful gas called methane, Cows can produce about eighty million metric tons every year)

We can help out by doing a lot of things. We just have to stop or reduce some of our habits.
