Harvesting
Grafted trees produce after 5 years otherwise 6-8 years
Yields can be up to 35 kg from one tree leading to 2 tonnes / acre
Need to remove husks quickly to prevent rotting
Dried nuts can store for up to 4 years
It has long male yellow green catkins & yellow vertical cluster of female flowers

Like a deep (750mm) fertile well aerated soil
Site prone to late frosts are a risk to flower damage

Prune to reduce low branches where frost in a problem close to the ground or for animal underneath
Crows & squirrels can strip the tree + sometimes the codling moth can damage nuts (which hens can reduce their numbers)
Protect young trees from hares and rabbits
