“At Cherry Elementary, families from the Mulberry Houses appeared detached from the school and detached from other families, particularly white and middle-class families. This detachment from the school was not replicated in social relations among families within the Mulberry Houses. Ms. Coleman, a resident of the Mulberry Houses and parent of Summer, explained her relationship with other Mulberry parents: "It's always known, if you go up there [Cherry], you can check on mine, and if go up there I can check on yours [kids]. We sit and discuss the teachers and little issues that we might have. But chat's the extent. I'm concerned with mine, I love them all, but mine is my concern." (Lewis-McCoy, 2014, p. 86)
Teacher selection was a popular practice among parents but not among building staff. Each school building was responsible for determining its own protocol around teacher selection.” (Lewis-McCoy, R., 2014, p.88)
