lymphatic system

made up of

lymphatic duct

lymph tissue

spleen

thymus

tonsils

L.S

works with the circulatory system

removes waste and excess fluids from the body tissue and works on immunity and fat transportation

Lymph

thin, watery fluid made of intercellular fluid

intercellular fluid

made of water, digested nutrienrs, salts, hormones, oxygen, Co2, lymphocytes, and metabollic wastes

lymphatic vessels

small open ended lymph vessels act like a drain pipe are called lymphatic capillaries

they pick up lymph at the tissues and travel through capillaries to the larger lymphatic vessles

lacteals

small intestines, there are special lymphatic capillaries called lacteals

pick up digested fats

when the lymph is mixed with the fat its called chyle

lymph nodes

glands located all over the body and usually show up in clusters or groups

small, round, oval masses that range from the head of a pinhead in size or to an almond in size

clean and purify lymph then leaves the lymph node by a single lymphatic vessel and moves on to join larger vessels

Right Thoracic Duct

short tube that receives all of the purified lymph from the right side of the head and neck

will empty into the right subclavin vein returning the clean lymph to the blood

Thoracic Duct

much larger, and drains the rest of the body

empties into the left subclavin vein

cisterna chyli

storage area for the purified lymph. Receives chyle from the intestinal lacteals

Tonsils

masses of lymphatic tissue that filter interstitual fluid

palatine tonsils

located on each side of soft palate

adenoids tonsils

located in the nasopharynx

Lingual tonsils

located on the back of the tongue

spleen

organ located beneath the side of the diaphragm and in the back of the upper side of the stomach

produces leukocytes, antibodies. Destroys old RBC and thrombocytes. Filters metabolism and wastes away from all body tissues

Thymus

mass of lymph tissue located in center of the upper chest

wastes away after puberty

after puberty it is replaced with fat and connective tissue

Adenitis

inflammation or infection of the lymph nodes

occues in large quantities

S/S- fever, swollen, painful nodes

treatment- antibiotics, warm moist compresses

Hodgkins disease

chronic disease of lymph nodes

S/S painless swellin of lymph nodes, fever, night sweats, weightloss, fatigue, itching

chemotherapy and radiation

Lymphangitis

inflammation of lymphatic vessels

results from infection in extremity

S/S red streak extending up the arm, fever, chills, tenderness/pain

treatment- antibiotics, rest, elevation of affected part, warm moist compresses

splenomegaly

enlargment of spleen

results from abnormal accumulation of RBC, mono, cirrohsis of liver

S/S swelling, abdominal pain, anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia

treat the underlying cause

Tonsilitis

inflammation of the tonsils

throat pain, dysphagia, fever, yelloe/white spots, swollen lymph nodes
