Industrial Food Chain
Farming is much different than it use to be
"Back then 1 out of every 4 Americans lived on a famr...Out of 300 million Americans, only 2 million are still farmer." pg 32
With the industrial food chain, not as many people live on farms as they use to
"(in 1919)The average farmer grew enough to feed 12 other americans...the average american today grows enough food to feed 140 other people." pg 32
We grow more food to feed our tremendous population.
More forests being torn down to make room for farming
All the food the industrial food chain grows is sprayed with harmful chemicals
"That's one of the reasons corn has succeeded so well. It's relatively easy for humans to breed new types of corn to fit our needs." pg 34
Scientists are genetically modifying corn
With more corn, we feed more of it to animals like cows that aren't made to eat corn
Hybrid corn quadrupled the yields of farmers, from about 20 bushels per acre to about 80 bushels per acre" pg 35
Toxic Waste pg. 61
Bad For Animals
Bad Health = Bad Meat
Antibiotics
Ground Water
Drinking Water
Impacts our health
Death
The government and agribusinesses want to keep corn prices low pg. 46
Cheap corn means animal feed, cheap meat, cheap HFCS, and corn can stay king of the supermarket pg. 46-47
Healthier whole foods (fruits and vegetables) cost more to buy
Farmers lose money by growing corn pg. 47
The government pays them part of the difference (subsidies), but it is still not enough pg. 47
All of the corn that farmers grow gets put on the market
Small family farms go out of business and get replaced by big industrial farms
Feeding cows corn gets cows sick pg.70
Eating corn makes cows bloated. pg. 70
They produce a lot of gaspg.72
They belch a lot to release that gas pg.72
Corn diet doesn't let the gas escape pg.72
Gases in the rumen get filled with gas and presses up against the lungs pg.72
If not treated the pressure will choke and kill the cow. pg.72
They develop a disease called acidosis pg.72
They have too much as acid in their rumen pg.72
causes heart burn pg.72
kills the cow pg.72
Cows with acidosis stop eating, pant, drool, paw and scratch their bellies and eat dirt pg.73
death
diarreha pg.73
ulcers pg.73
liver disese pg.73
pneumonia pg.73
feedlot polio pg.73
New/ Deadly Bacteria pg.61-62
Gets in our meat
Give animals antibiotics
We eat antibiotics
Impacts the animals health
Impacts our health
Cattle forced to eat corn pg. 62
Corn affects animals health (bloat) pg. 62
The land is affected pg 62
The growth of crops is affected
The manure can kill the crops.
There is manure everywhere causing pollution pg.76
The cow manure can get to the cows eyes and affect their health pg.75
cows can get very sick a
Affects the health of us and their eaters (bloat) pg.62
Bacteria in the cows can also be found in our burgers and steak
Humans can contract E coli from this. (note on the side)
Death
Corn causes cows to get heartburn some die from this but usually they just get sick. Pg. 72-73
Heartburn comes with many other diseases that harms the cows organs, this is treated with antibiotics.
Eater then get those antibiotics in their systgem causing the sytem to get used to them. Pg. 73
When we need antibiotics they will not work because we are used to them.
Rules and regulation are not as strict pg. 69
Cattle eat wastes products from slaughtered animlas and chicken
Diseases could come back

death
impacts animalas health
Farmers give hybrid corn a lot of chemical fertilizers pg. 44
There is 80 pounds of excess fertilizer pg. 44
Some of it evaporates into the air and creates acid rain pg. 44
Impacts the surrounding environment
Some of it turns into nitrous oxide pg. 44
Increases global warming pg. 44
Some of it seeps down into the ground water pg. 44
Impacts our health
Limits our use of well water
The rest of the extra fertilizer gets washed away by the rains and eventually ends up in the ocean pg. 45

More cheap meat pg. 61
Meat is more available to more people
People eat more meat than they need to
Impacts our health
Obesity
death
"Natural plant eaters are fed meat." pg 69
