SLIP CASTING OF WHITEWARES
Important criterion
-SLIP-
I) High solid content
II) Suitable slip viscosity
III) Suitable thixotropy
IV) Stable and particles always in suspension
-PRODUCED CAST-
I) Good properties (dense, solid, good green strength)
II) Not easily cracks
Advantages
Used for complex shaped products
For big /bulky products
High reproducibility rate with smooth surface and fine details
Any form of ceramic suspension is possible as long as it is chemically stable
Disadvantages
Long processing time
Need to dry cast and working mould
Requires large working area
Problem relating to preferential alignment when using clay
Parameters to consider
i) Slip density
ii) Viscosity
iii) Thixotropy
Casting
Stages involved
I) Pour slip into a porous mould
II) Extraction of water into moulds through pores or voids
III) Formation of solid layer on mould surface
IV) Removal of the excess slip
Types
:black_small_square:Drain Casting
:black_small_square:Solid Casting
Forms
:black_small_square:Bench Casting
:black_small_square:Battery Casting
Factors influenced
I) Solid concentration & rheology of slip
II) Distribution of pore sizes in mould
III) Permeability of cast layer
