Tom
Was a broken little boy. He was angry and had an extremely explosive temper, throwing chairs, shoving desks, then isolating himself under a table and refusing to come out until his dad arrived at school.
Background
He had been homeless on the streets in Arizona with his mom and sister until his father came to take him back to our state. Although his mom had a diagnosed mental illness, his father was helpful and supportive of my efforts.

Compare and contrast
In this particular case, I am not surprised that he suffers from both as they are interconnected, anger may lead to lose of control therefore not being able to cope and not being able to cope may lead to aggressive behaviour as a cry for help
-
Differences
-
Aggressive:
- Irritable
- Disregards rules
Tiered intervention:
Some of the strategies would be similar because as mentioned these two problems are somewhat intertwined:
- One to one conversation
- Coping skills
- Counsellor referral
- Documentation
Coping:
- Reflective listening
- Physician
Aggressive:
- Behaviour Contract
- Behaviour Specialist Referral
If the teacher feels that tier 1 has not worked, then these are the steps that will be implemented next
Coping skills are probably the most relevant skill related to the students problem
-
In this section here simple techniques are required and the teacher has the flexibility to choose which intervention they feel is appropriate at that time
After Tier 1 the teacher can assign
a daily tracking form where the student can fill out how they feel with a self monitoring assignment sheet completed over a weekly period
At this stage it would be wise to have a third party intervene and informing the school counsellor with the data from tier one will help him/her help diagnose the problem and offer possible solutions and get the parents involved
If by the now the student has not been improving, the next step would from a school counsellor is a physician and continue to work on coping skills, maybe introduce new strategies . No matter how bad a situation is students should always be presented with rewards/incentives
Once a diagnostic comes back from the physician, the student can then be referred to a counsellor (external), and if necessary the district council may get involved
It is vital that parents are always contacted before any official document get sent out to avoid shock
Talk to the student alone and give them a chance to express themselves
The first form of data tracking should be general and, yet documented in case the situation continues
If tier one fails then the student would undergo the following techniques to help calm him down along referring him to the council because this type of action may harm a fellow classmate.
Following data from tier one, documentation would continue and the referral form for the counsellor would be documented and a form would be drafted to see a behaviour specialist in case it was required
A contract will be created with the student so he acknowledges the seriousness of the situation alongside an assessment. The aim is to avoid suspension.
By this stage an external counsellor would be required for the student alongside a consequence log as the student has been given numerous opportunities to change their behaviour
