Try to imagine a paperknife. This paperknife is created by a craftsman who has the idea of creating such a tool and how had a clear understanding of what is required of a paper-knife. It needs to be sharp enough to cut through paper, but not so sharp as to be dangerous. It is impossible for a paperknife to exist without its makers knowing what it is going to be used for.
Therefore, the essence of a paperknife - or all of the things that make it a paperknife and not a steak knife - comes before the existence of any particular paper-knife.
We are not made for any particular purpose. We exist but not because of our purpose ore essence like a paperknife does; our existence precedes our essence.
Defininfg ourselves, however is not just a matter of being able to say what we are as human begins instead, it is a matter of shaping ourselves into whatever kind of being we choose to become. This is what makes us, at root, different from all the other kinds of begin in the world- we can become whatever we chose to make of ourselves. Human beings posses the ability to actively shape themselves.
Satre's philosophy is one of freedom. We are free to choose how to shape ourselves although we do have to accept some limitations (for example the ability to grow wings and fly).
Satre want us to break free of habitual ways of thinking, tellen use to face up to the implications of living in a world in which nothing is destined.
By making choices we are also creating a template for how we think a human life ought to be . Freedom is the greatest responsibility of all. When i decide to become a dancer, then I am not just deciding that for myself. I am implicitly saying that begin a dancer is a worthwhile activity.
In the 50's and 60's he inspired young people (especially) by has call to use his call to use their freedom to fashion there existence. He inspired them to challenge the traditionalist. He is called the key influence on the streets protest in Paris in May 1968. In these protest he helpen to bring down the conservative government and heal o more liberal climate throughout France.
