Melissa Armendarez P.2 Immune System
Innate/natural immune defenses and Adaptive/acquired immune defenses
Innate immunity is something already present in the body
first defense against invaders.
created in response to exposure to a foreign substance
composed of B cells and T cells
antigens and antibodies
a toxin or other foreign substance which induces an immune response in the body, especially the production of antibodies
antigens are structures specifically bound by antibodies or a cell surface version of Ab ~ B cell antigen receptor
antibodies
a large, Y-shaped protein produced mainly by plasma cells that is used by the immune system to neutralize pathogens such as pathogenic bacteria and viruses
IgG, IgM, IgA, IgE and IgD
humoral vs. cellular response
deals with antigens from pathogens that are freely circulating, or outside the infected cells
involves B cells that recognize antigens or pathogens that are circulating in the lymph or blood
The binding of chemical signals to their corresponding receptors induces events within the cell that ultimately change its behavior
Major functions of the
Lymphatic & Immune systems
network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials
transport lymph
absorbs and transports fatty acids and fats
network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body
combine to seek out and destroy disease-causing organisms or substances
disorders of the Immune system
Asthma
a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and produce extra mucus
Crohn's disease
an inflammatory bowel disease
diabetes
your blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels are too high
systems; Anatomy of the lymphatic system (including vessels, nodes, MALT,
spleen and thymus);
vessels begin as open-ended capillaries, which feed into larger and larger lymphatic vessels, and eventually empty into the bloodstream by a series of ducts
lymph travels through the lymph nodes
forced through the vessels by the movements of the body, the contraction of skeletal muscles during body movements, and breathing
lymphatic capillaries empty into larger lymphatic vessels
initiates immune responses to specific antigens encountered along all mucosal surfaces
