Additional information
During the run up to the Games, all African American athletes were urged to boycott the Games. The gesture Smith and Carlos used was called the 'Black Power' salute and this protest was watched by millions of people from around the world.
Context
African Americans protested to the world when two black athletes used a medal ceremony for the 200 metres to protest about the lack of civil rights in the USA. At the time, black Americans lacked equality and opportunity, were forced to be segregated in many aspects of society and many lived in extreme poverty.

South Africa's invitation to the games was withdrawn, because of other countries threatening to boycott the games, because of South Africa's apartheid regime

Consequences
Both John Carlos and Tommie Smith, were banned from ever competing at olympic level again. The 1968 olympics were said to have killed their carers. However following this, changes and amendments were brought about to make is it more fair on non white citizens.

Impact
American decides to boycott the Olympics as people had followed the Vice president's decision. This had caused more tensions between the two superpowers at the time which had lead to the boycott of Russia in Los Angeles

1979 Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan just before the Olympics which the Americans were mad at so they had boycotted. The boycott by America lead to 65 Nations boycotting the 1980 Moscow Olympic

The cold war was near to its end,meaning there was a lot of tensions between America and Russia. The soviets were invading Afghanistan which the Americans did not like
