ANS Receptors
Muscarinic (a subtype of cholinergic)
Parasympathetic Effects: constricts pupil, decreases heart rate, decreases contraction strength, bronchoconstriction, contracts smooth muscle walls, relaxes sphincters, stimulates secretion, urination, erection
G protein coupled
Neurotransmitter: Acetylcholine
Sympathetic Effects: increases thermoregularity of sweat glands, vasodilation of skeletal muscle vessels
Where: in all target membranes of parasympathetic division, sweat glands in skin (sympathetic) and blood vessels in skeletal muscle (sympathetic)
Nicotinic (a subtype of cholinergic)
Where: postsynaptic membrane of ALL autonomic ganglia, adrenal medulla
Ligand gated
Effects: muscle contraction, activation of postganglionic neurons
Neurotransmitter: Acetylcholine
Beta (a subtyoe of adrenergic)
Beta 1
Sympathetic Effects: increases heart rate and contraction strength
Neurotransmitter: Norepinephrine
Beta 2
Sympathetic Effects: arteriole dilation, bronchiole dilation, glycogenolysis
Neurotransmitter:Norepinephrine
Andrenergic
Neurotransmitter: Norepinephrine
Where: sympathetic postganglionic fibers
Alpha (a subtype of adrenergic)
Alpha 1
Sympathetic Effects: pupil dilation, arteriole constriction, constriction of sphincters in digestive tract, glycogenolysis
Neurotransmitter: Norepinephrine
Alpha 2
Sympathetic Effects: inhibits secretion
Neurotransmitter: Norepinephrine
Cholinergic
Neurotransmitter: Acetylcholine.
Where: sympathetic preganglionic fibers, parasympathetic preganglion fibers, parasympathetic postganglionic fibers, a few sympathetic postganglionic fibers (sweat glands, skeletal muscle blood vessels)
