Reading 24: Strategic Leadership
Strategic leadership is leader's ability to influence others to make day-to-day decisions that enhance the long term viability of the organisation while maintaining its short term financial stability (Rowe, 2001)
Requirement
Knowledge of core aims
Collaboration
Coordination
Strategy coalesces around the big idea (Purcell, 2003)
Must be consistent with the leadership
Leader must embody the purpose of the organisation in order to lend credibility to the strategy
Purpose of organisation must infuse whole organisation
Leadership sets purpose & must be prepared to face opposition from stakeholders
Criteria
Concept (main idea) must reflect organisation's identity, enabling people to recognise, identify & own it
Direction is not an about-face - on edge of what people already do & understand
Leader is credible in making that choice (has made similar choices in past)
Leader takes on the risk
Leadership roles distribute throughout organisation
Allows individuals to see strategy & it aligns with leadership; supports distributed leadership
Leader needs to have good understand of organisation & people within it
Focuses on
main idea + leadership + personnel
Understands strengths & weaknesses
Recognises capacity for change
