ANAEMIA
Symptoms
- anaemia symptoms are caused by the inadequate delivery of oxygen to the tissues. They can vary from simple fatigue to death according to the nature and severity of the anaemia
- tiredness, fatigue, weakness, headaches
- decreased appetite,
- loss of concentration, irritability
- orthostatic hypotension
- shortness of breath,
- unusual food cravings (pica)
Signs
- pallor (skin, conjunctivae, mucosae)
- tachycardia, orthostatic hypotension
- dyspnea, rapid and/or irregular heart rate, systolic murmur
- sore mouth and tongue, brittle nails
- jaundice, dark urine, enlarged spleen
- rash, easy bruising, bleeding gums, prolonged bleeding
- no symptoms if anaemia is mild or occurrying slowly
Diagnostic tests
- haemoglobin, haematocrit, rbc count, MCV, wbc count
- platelet count, reticulocyte count,
- serum iron, serum ferritin level,total iron binding capacity (TIBC)
- folate - test, bilirubin level, B12 vitamin level, bone marrow examination
Causes
excessive blood loss
- perinatal haemorrhage:
from twin to twin, feto-maternal placental abruption
during or after birth
- gastrointestinal disorders:
gastro-oesophageal reflux
gastric ulcers, Meckel’s diverticulum
cow’s milk protein intolerance, parasites (hookworm)
- epistaxis, heavy menstrual periods
- overdose of aspirin, NSAIDs
- bleeding disorders (haemophilia, von Willebrandt disease)
- iatrogenic (excessive venesection in infants)
