Coming of Age
"Down These Mean Streets" by Piri Thomas is a coming of age story that explores crime, anger, racism, and the unfairness of society that leads Piri to end up in jail serving a sentence. We meet Piri at 12 years old, with anger towards his father. That anger develops through his growing up and adds on to the pressures he has in life.
My favorite thing is monsters by Emil Ferris we see another coming of age story . We meet a 10 year old who transforms into a werewolf. In my view I see this as a real life interpretation. A girl growing up witnesses a murder and it speaks to the life she's living. A side of good and bad. It's all a discovery for her. We meet various characters that provide this coming of age aspect that in many ways we can relate. One way or another we do. Its not the casual coming of age story like Piri. Yet it still gives us a dark look at reality
" Hurray for the Riff Riff- Pa'lante
In this video we see a family devasted by a natural event that forced them to separate. The father was the one to leave the family and head to the states to help his family out. Society has abandoned them at this point and all there is left to do is to move forward themselves.
In "AmeRican" by Tato Alviera we see society driven to the light. Opportunity and freedom are highlighted suggesting that society has been good. Yet we also see this perceived idea of society but not the truth, The aspect o multiculturalism is evident as well.
People are offered many opportunities in life and yet they still fail to capture the one that makes them bold in their presence. we become afraid of our decisions and at some point we must move beyond that. The poem called " Puerto Rican Obituary" by Pedro Pedro Pietri we see that exact idea come to reality. He writes " All died, waiting for the garden of eden, to open up again, under new management, All died, dreaming about america." Life passed them by and nothing ever happned. That's the saddest thing that can happen to anyone. What we want is never realized.
