Pope vs. King
Pope Gregory VII didn't want the king to be able to appoint Church officials. (big argument)
The pope could excommunicate the king and de- king him as well. (and he was )
Pope Leo crowned Charlemagne Emperor of Rome.
The king could choose who was king next.
Feudalism
Peasants were very different than serfs. They weren't payed to work thought, just like serfs. They were always at the bottom of the chart.
The chart goes kings and queens, nobles, knights, peasants, and serfs.
Knights fought for their kings and queens. They fought with metal helmet. They are the third place on the feudalism chart.
King William The Conqueror developed feudalism to protect people and land from invaders.
The land was divided into estates or fiefs, that knights protect.
Catholic Church
In Medieval England, church was part of everyone's life. They believed in God, Heaven, and Hell
People got married, buried, and confirmed at the Catholic Church
The pope was believed to be God's Representative on Earth.

English Law
The Magna Carta was a document that contained 63 clauses and laws and gave more rights to people.
The King was very unfair and would collect taxes to fund his unsuccessful wars.
On June 15, 1215, many Barons and Lords gathered and confronted King John in Runnymede, Surrey and forced him to agree and sign the Magna Carta
Habeas Corpus gave people the right to fair trail and parliament could approve taxes by the king.
The Magna Carta was the foundation for the Constitution in America today.
Crusades
There was a "Children Crusade" taught by kids. However, they dint make it to the Holy Land.
The Pope Urban II persuaded many people through speeches. After that, he persuaded locals, news spread all across europe as knights joined into a growing army to lead the first crusade.
In 1202 the Christians wanted to take over Jerusalem. Even thought the crusades fell, they made trade better, and better government.
Spread of Christianity
Children were taught at a church by priests. The Children that the priests taught were nobles children.
The monks have to vow to poverty, chastity, and obedience.
A monks main job is to rewrite the bible because they were some of the only people that could write at the time.
The Franks took over Western Roman Empire + King Clovis spread Christianity to provide stability and peace.
Reconquest
The Spanish Inquisition started by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Queen Isabella started being queen in 1478.
King Ferdinand II of Argon and Queen Isabella I of Castile established the Inquisition in 1478.
Medieval Spain was a battle- field where christians attempted to control the Moors who wanted to take over all of Europe, and were stopped which led them to become poor commoners.
The Christians rallied together to take back spain that was took by the muslim's from the romans.
Black Death :warning:
The song Ring Around the Rosie, which is about people dying from the plague.
One effect of the plague was that 1/3 of Europe's population was lost and died.
The Black Death was spread from bacteria in the rats then the fleas that bit them carried the disease in their abdomen, then bit the human and got them infected.
Geography of Europe
Some waterways are Rhine River, Seine River, LAire River, Danube River, North Sea, Adriatic Sea, Mediterranean Sea.
Europe gets approximately 106 rainy days each year and receives a total og 22.976 inches of rain.
Europe has been the Central point of two of the biggest wars in modern history, World War 1 and World War 2. It was used for farming. 39% of Medieval was used for agriculture.
Castles were built on hills for protection.
