Psalm 78 by Asaph:
Telling to the next generation
recipients
whom to tell
O my people
their children x3
the coming generation x2
ask them to
give ear to my teaching
incline your ears to my words
the expectation
they should set their hope in God
not forget the works of God
keep His commandments
should not be like the former generation of stubborn and rebellious generation, without steadfast heart and unfaithful spirit
what to tell
in a parable
dark sayings from of old
things that we have heard and known, our fathers have told us
glorious deeds of the Lord
his might
the wonders he has done
established a testimony in Jacob
appointed a law in Israel, as commands and teaching
The Ephraim
did not keep God's covenant, refused to walk according to His law
forgot His work and the wonders He had shown to them
the wonders in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan
divided sea and let them pass through
made the waters stand
led them with a cloud in the daytime
with a fiery light
gave them drink abundantly from the deep by splitting rocks in the wilderness
made streams coming out of the rock and caused the waters to flow down like rivers
against
rebelling against the most high in the desert
yet they sinned still more against Him
spoke against God
Can God spread a table in the wilderness?
Can God also give bread or provide meat for His people?
tested God in the heart
demanding food they craved
Moses? struck the rock and the water gushed out and the stream overflowed
God rejected the tent of Joseph and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim, but rather choose the tribe of Judah
God chose David his servant by taking him from the sheepfolds, to shepherd His people and Israel's inheritance
David shepherded them with upright heart and guided with his skillful hands
What God responded to His people
When God heard their speaking, He was full of wrath x2
His anger rose against Israel
reasons: His people did not believe in Him & trust His saving power
utterly rejected Israel
forsook His dwelling and tents among mankind
a fire was kindled against Jacob
Yet
commanded the skies
rained down manna
His people ate the bread
they ate and were well filled
rained meat / winged birds like dust / sea sand
let them fall in the midst of their camp
gave them the grain of Heaven
sent them food in abundance
caused the wind to blow by His power
being compassionate; atoned for their iniquity; did not destroy them
often restrained His anger & did not stir up all His wrath
God remembered they were flesh like wind that passes and comes not again
he put His adversaries to rout & put them to everlasting shame
Before his people had satisfied their craving or while the food was still in their mouth
the anger of God rose against them
killed the strongest of them
fire devoured their young men so young women had no marriage
laid low the young men of Israel
How His people respond to God's teaching or work
they still sinned
turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers
moved Him to the jealousy with their idols
despite the wonders, they did not believe
Consequence:
God made their days vanish like a breath, their years in terror
they often rebelled against Him in the wilderness & grieved Him in the desert
rebelled against the most high God
they tested x2 God again and again
they provoked the Holy One of Israel
provoked Him to anger with their high places
they did not remember His Power & the days when He redeemed them from the foe (He performed His signs & marvels in Egypt & Zoan, e.g. blood rivers, swarms of flies & frogs; locust destroying fruit & crops; hails & frost destroying vines & sycamores; hails & thunderbolts destroying cattle & flocks
did not keep His testimonies
HE? killed them
Consequence: they repented and sought God earnestly
Consequence: They remember God was their rock and their redeemer
But, they flattered him & lied to him;
their heart was not steadfast towards Him;
they were not faithful to His covenant
gave His people to the sword
the priest fell by the swords
loose His burning anger, wrath, indignation, distress, destroying angels on them
not spare them from death, & gave their life over to the plague
struck down the firstborn
the seas overwhelmed them
God led out His people and guided x2 them in safe in the wilderness (like sheep & flock)
they were not afraid
brought them to His Holy Land and to His won mountain
drove out the nations and apportion them to settle Israel
