Metabolic Rate
Metabolic rate is the quantity of energy used by the body over a given time
It is measured in kiljoules (kilocalories)
Glucose + Oxygen ---> ATP + Carbon dioxide + Water
Measuring metabolic rate
Carbon dioxide production per unit time
Energy (heat) production per unit time
Oxygen consumption per unit time
Respirometers and calorimeters are different pieces of equipment that do this
Respirometers / calorimeters
Respirometers
If a man consumes 350L of oxygen on average per day this equates to 1700kcal or 7000kj
As the creature produces carbon dioxide through respiration this is absorbed by the NADH beads
A respirometer measures the volume of oxygen uptake by an organism
As the creature uses up the oxygen in the tube, the level of liquid will rise
This can be measured to see the volume of oxygen used
Calorimeters
Calorimetre measure the heat generated by an organism and calculate the metabolic rate from he results
Metabolism
The term for the thousand of biochemicals reaction that occur within a living cell
Oxygen
