Patho:
Cholangitis is an infection of the liver's bile duct. It is commonly caused by an obstruction such as gallstones or strictures. Bile is produced in the liver and is used to break down fats in the body and remove bilirubin. When gallstones or other blockages occur bacteria that is normally flushed through is stuck and can cause an infection. Cholangitis is a serious life threatening condition that can lead to sepsis if the bacteria enters the blood stream. It can also cause hepatic abscess that can also cause death. The most common cause of death in cholangitis is MODS.
