What are the benefits and disadvantages of implementing ASL into concepts of early math for young children who are d/hh?
Advantages
Studies suggest ASL/spatial awareness could increase scores for certain concepts
(note: most discussed Deaf not deaf children)
Benefits in concepts of providing sequential numbers after a prompt, object counting, one to one correspondence & cardinality (Leyhart, et al., 2002)
Native ASL users perform as well as hearing counterparts in rote counting
(Secada, et al., 1984)
note: questionable study?
Oral deaf children did better in spatial tasks than hearing children (Zarfaty, et al., 2004)
Suggests teaching children in spatial tasks will improve math in early years, creating a stronger foundation

Disadvantages
Study says early ASL exposure for children with CIs & LSLS approach have been correlated with lower spoken vocabulary/language/academic scores later in life (Geers,et al., 2017)

Should we focus on other strategies, like visual cues? Number lines improved numerical estimations in deaf adults
(Bull, et al., 2011)
