We can use am, are and is to talk about people, places and things. for example, calum says 'I'm from Ireland.'Thiago says 'The people are very friendly,'and 'Ireland is a great country.'

Calum says 'My mother isn't Irish.' Thiago says 'My parents aren't from Brazil.' Isn't and aren't are negatives ( isn't=is not; aren't=are not ).

When we speak we usually use contractions like I'm not you aren't and she isn't. For example I'm not a student. You aren't a good cook. She isn't Spanish.

be: am, are and is
In the present tense there are three ways to say be: am,are and is. We usully use contractions like I'm, you're and he's when we speak. For example: ' I'm a student.' You're a good cook.' He's my friend.'

Calum asks two yes or no questions 'Are they all Brazilian ?' and 'Is he a student?'


Calum asks two yes or no questions 'Are they all Brazilian ?' and 'Is he a student?' Thiago gives two short answers No, they aren't and Yes, he is.


We start yes or no questions with Am, Are and Is. The subject comes next, for example: Am I...? Are you...? or Is he...?


Notice the order of the words in these questions (Am/ Are / Is + subject).


Short answer usually have three words. For example: Yes, I am. or No I'm not. : :
