The theme is "People of color are discriminated and are forced to stop using their voices to stand up for themselves".

My first impression was that the poet's use of words was very powerful, and the poem itself gives an insight of what it feels like to be trapped

The purpose of the poem is to give an insight of how racism affects people, and makes them feel trapped with no voice to be heard.

Poet background?
Maya Angelou was also a victim of racism, she wrote many other poems about other topics that needs to have light shed on it.

What do you know about the time period, and do you think it had anything to do with the poem?
In 1983, racism and oppression was very common, but it was also the year "March for equality, and against racism" march started in Paris. It does not have anything to do with the poem, because there is still a percentage of people who experience racism.

Repetition : "The caged bird sings, with fearful trills".

Does the poem rhyme?
There were a few stanzas that rhyme, but not all of them. Rhyming creates cohesion and musicality to the poem.
