Audio-Lingual Method
LIKE: Uses dialogues, role-plays, drills designed to help students learn sentence patterns--expected to learn without explicit instructions
-
:check:WHAT: Drills are used to teach structural patterns; set phrases are memorized with a focus on intonation, grammatical explanations are kept to a minimum, vocab is taught in context, audio-visual aids are used, pronunciation focus, correct responses are positively reinforced immediately

-
Nominalization
:check:WHAT: nouns that are created from adjectives (words that describe nouns) or verbs (action words).
EX # 2: decision is a nominalization of decide, and argument is a nominalization of argue.
-
WHY: it is important to understand what these words mean when you see them. Second, if you are aware of what nominalizations are, you may use them to make your writing easier to understand.
-
-
EX #1"Struggling readers can become engaged readers with the right instructions-- then write Engagement leads students to read a variety of books.
lexico-syntax
:check:WHAT: Patterns that are generalized linguistic structures that indicate semantic relationships between terms and can be applied to the identification of concepts and conceptual relations in text.
-
-
:star:Interesting: With exposure to larger masses of input, children become more consistent in using particular argument structure patterns, and expand these patterns to additional verbs (Akhtar 1999;Akhtar and Tomasello 1997;Clark 1995;Lieven, Pine and Baldwin 1997;Tomasello and Brooks 1999). As more verbs interact with more patterns to achieve a "critical mass" children abstract away from particular schemas, and their knowledge of VAS becomes increasingly top-down and constructionist rather than bottom-up and lexical.
