Why was there opposition in Czech
Dubcek wanted "socialism with a human face".
Czechs wanted less censorship, more freedom of speech and a reduction in the activities of the secret police.
There was only one new mode developed in Czechoslovakia.
How did the USSR respond?
The USSR argued with Dubcek to slow him down
Troops performed very public exercises on the Czech border
USSR thought about imposing economic sanctions, but didn't because they thought the Czechs would ask help from the West.
Finally, Soviet tanks/troops moved into Czechoslovakia.
Outcome
There was little violent resistance.
Dubcek was removed from power.
Even though Dubcek expressed loyalty to communism and the Warsaw Pact Brezhnew was worried that new ideas coming out of Czechoslovakia would spread.
Eastern Europe leaders feared their own pwoplw would demand the same freedom that Dubcek had allowed Czechoslovakia.
