The polish economy was in bad shape
Price of food was going way up.
Wages were not rising along with the price of foods
Overall economy was shrinking
Polands foreign dept was rising too
Solultions
Workers began to set up trade union which would organize strike in order to make changes.
The communist Gov't cracked domination union strikes. (Arrests, loss of jobs)
Solidarity (Union) issued it's 21 demands to the governments all were mets.
Solutions- more pay, end of censorship/free speech, workers benefits equal to communist party members, broadcasting of catholic church services, election of factory managed.
solidarity membership grew quickly- 1. September 1980-3.5 million people 2. October 1980-7 million 3. January 1981- 9.4 million people.
Importance of solidarity
This was an organized movement, not street protest or riots
The leader of the solidarity (Lech Walesa) gave interviews and was seen as a true leader.
The rest of the world paid attention to the situation in Poland.
USSR response
USSR placed tanks and troops on the boarder with poland.
