Unit 6 how secure was the USSR's control over Eastern Europe
poland solid
problems in Poland: polish economy in bad shape, prices of food way up,wages were not rising, foreign debt rising.
what did they do:The people formed a work union and went on strike.
Ussr response:tanks and army was placed.General Jaruzelski declared martial law.solidarity was declared illegal.Poland eventually won.
Made simple:They were unhappy because Poland’s economy was doing very poorly and they did not have all the freedoms that others had in non-communist countries. The people of Poland decided to join a workers union named ‘Solidarity’ to protest the USSR’s control of their country.Unlike the protests of Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany.the USSR reacted differently by only threatening force, banning the union, and making some arrests. ‘Solidarity’ did not give in to these attempts to stop their movement and eventually won their independence from the USSR without the bloody violence that other Communist countries had to live through.
Berlin wall
Prague spring
Prague spring: Czechoslovakia attempted to break away from soviet influence and its bad laws.Hungary had done it first,so they had an idea of what no to do.
reasons the Prague spring happened:the Czech economy was in bad shape that people hated it.There was a large amount of censorship. The people also had a lack of freedom.
Consequences of Prague spring: 70 people died. The Soviet union invaded, tanks and army was placed in Czechoslovakia.
Made simple:After WWII the USSR had taken control of Czechoslovakia. By 1968 the Czechs in the Capital, Prague, were tired of the lower standard of living, lack of Freedoms, and the One-Party system. This moment of change in Czechoslovakia was called the Prague Spring. It showed the world that USSR was bound to use force to keep control of its satellite states in Eastern Europe.
Hungarian uprising
Made Simple:The USSR also banned the Catholic Church, used the secret police and controlled the education system in Hungary.3,000 Hungarians were killed and 200,00 fled to Austria. The leaders of the uprising were imprisoned and the new president, Imre Nagy, was executed.
Reasons why Hungarians were upset:
Church was banned.
The people hated the secret police.
They hated there leader, and wanted a new one.
The Hungarians wanted the withdrawal of the "Red Army."
The people wanted to leave the Warsaw Pact.
USSR Response
USSR decided to have many tanks placed in Hungary.
Imre Nagy the leader was executed by USSR.
USSR army invaded, and stayed on Hungary.
