Outcome
Dubek was removed from power and there was little violence resistance
How did the USSR respond?
They tried to slow Dubek down by arguing/talking to him. They intimidated people by doing public military training and finally Soviet tanks moved into Czech
Why was there opposition in Czechoslovakia?
czechs wanted less censorship, more freedom of speech and less activities for the secret police.
Poland Solididarity
Solutions:
Workers began to set up trade unions and organized strikes
Response of the USSR
solidarity was declared illegal and tanks were placed in poland
Problems:
The economy was bad, the food was overpriced and poland's foreign debt was rising.
Aftermath
solidarity continued its strikes
Hungarian Uprising
Why did Hungarians hate communism?
They hated communism because they had no freedom of speech, the Catholic Church was banned, They feared the secret police and they disliked the army living in their country.
What did they do in response?
Students protested violently and took down the Stalin statue and fought back against the Soviet army with force. They demanded many things such as free elections, The Soviet army to withdraw from Hungary and their withdraw from the Warsaw Pact.
What did the USSR do?
1000's of tank rolled into Hungary and only 2 weeks of fighting killed 30,000 and many others fled the country.
Berlin Wall
Why was it a problem for the USSR
? it hurt the USSR's economy and reputation.
What did the USSR do?
They built a wall around East Berlin to communist this was called a protective shell around the East but to capitalist it was a prison wall
Why did Germans want to leave the East?
The West was clearly so much better than the East so many wanted to live in West Germany instead of the East.
USSR Collapse
What did the do?
Glasnost, perestrokia and decrease spending
What happened?
Eastern Europe and the 15 republics declared independence and finally the USSR collapsed.
Why reform?
economy was bad the government was corrupt and people did not trust the government the way they should
