Problem of Evil
Irenaean Theodicy
Humans are created in the image of God intelligent, conscious beings with a moral nature
-
-
Humans are not ready made perfect, morality developed through hard work, is more valuable than pre-programmed robotic morality
Irenaeus doesn't think humans were made perfect and he doesn't think the world was made perfect either
-
-
Augustinian Theodicy
An attempt to explain how the existence of suffering and evil is compatible with the existence of an all loving, all powerful God
God created a world without evil, moral evil and natural evil
-
God gave humans free will but when they choose to disobey God they create an absence of good within themselves
-
-
-
Epicurean Theodicy
Is God willing, but not able, then he is not omnipotent
Is he able, but not willing, then he is malevolent
Is he both able and willing, then why is there evil
Is he neither able nor willing, then why call him God
Free Will Defence
God created humans so that could they could respond in love, faithfulness and obedience to Him
Human beings must be free to respond to God in any way they choose and so humans must have free will
-
In order for free will to be genuine, God cannot intervene. If He did it would restrict freedom
-
Logical problem of evil

-
Premise 3 - An all loving and all powerful God, if he existed, would remove evil and suffering
