Bangladesh Land Uses
-
FISHING- coastal location and tropical water provide excellent fishing opportunities especially shrimp fishing
INDUSTRY- variety of industrial activities take advantage of the flat land with good access to shipping routes and cheap labour
SETTLEMENTS AND INFRASTRUCTURE- providing job opportunities and the people require settlements and transport e.g Chittagong
-
-
ship breaking industry- poor working conditions, exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, toxins and heavy metals
pollution from agricultural pesticides and fertilizers, decline fish stocks and marine organisms

Barton-on-sea is located on the South coast of England in Hampshire. It is found in Christchurch Bay, just east of Highcliffe. The prevailing wind comes from the south west
There is Hurst Castle Spit to the east composed of shingle . Large Bay between the spit and Hengistbury Head which is a sand beach
Large buildings such as Barton Cliff House and Barton Court that are protected by sea defences as it has landslide history. Behind there are car parks and a large residential housing estate. To the west and the east there is a holiday village and golf course
-
Longshore drift is occurring which moves sediment east to form the spit. There are sea defences at Highcliffe which will stop the replacement of sediment so the beach will be narrower
Groynes- failed as landslides have occurred in the area due to erosion e.g 1975 Barton Court Landslide
-
Arguments for Management:
- economic value of the cliffs
- businesses hotels and houses
- would need to rehome the people
- business owners would loose money
Arguments against:
- eroding too quickly so too difficult
- existing defences have been unsuccessful so not worth money
- HIGHCLIFFE- rock groynes- successful in reducing erosion
- CHEWTON BUNNY- regraded and channelised- unsuccessful as washed away in storm
- NAISH FARM- vegetation, rock armour and gentle slope- unsuccessful as rock fall and erosion
- BARTON- drainage- unsuccessful
rock armour and regrading successful as remained stable but unsuccessful as geologists expect it to still retreat
- GOLF COURSE- beach nourishment- successful as material held in place and no longshore drift but unsuccessful as end of groyne protection vulnerable
- H C SPIT- dredging- unsuccessful as creates interuptions
