Bread of life - John. 6,22-35
Intro
It is good to be here. It's always wonderful beeing together brothers and sisters in Christ praising the lord.
We are different i language, in culture, in skincolor - but we are one in Christ. And that connection is far more important than everything that divides us.
Grace to you, and peace from God our Father and the lord Jesus Christ.
The story
-
-
For some reason everyone has forgotten there lunch bags except for this little boy who have 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.
And Jesus is like: You feed them. And the disciples are like: What? And Jesus shows them that the way to do it is to surrender it, to give it to Jesus. And suddently there more than enough food for everyone.
Jesus can do great thing with the things we give to him. Our talents, our ressources, our love. Even when it seems like a small thing to us to begin with.
Looking for Jesus
The next day it seems like the rumors have spread and people are looking for this Jesus whom they've either heard of or seen turn 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish into a feast
-
And they look everywhere. Boats sailed out from Tiberias to the place they last saw Jesus, but he and his disciple were nowhere to be found.
-
My experience
I have to admit - at first, when I read this text at home and saw that I where to preach on bread/food in africa I felt so ashamed.
I come from a country where there is bread all over the place. We have more than enough. And I felt ashamed.
I can tell you, me and my family dont have that much. But on a worldwide scale we are rich. So who do I think I am coming here and talk about bread and food?
I then it hit me - I have one thing I wanna tell you. First of all - we have a lot of stuff. But we are poor in so many ways any way.
Why? Because having a lot of stuff can't save you. Having all the bread in the world can't satisfy your soul.
There's more to life than money, stuff and food. I when we lose sight of that - we are in danger of losing it all.
Jesus taking it deep
-
When they approach Jesus they are like: hey Jesus, cool thing the other day. Do you have any other tricks?
They don't say it, but Jesus reveals there heart. The coversation starts at the surface, but sudently goes deep.
Don't spend your time on things that perishes - but spend your time on food that endures for eternal life.
-
He is not saying that food or things of this world is useless or evil. A lot of things in this world is good and healthy for us. And food are essential to life
-
Sure bread can keep you going for a day or so, but what I've got can keep you going through death into eternity.
-
Mark 9
They ask Jesus: How can we get this bread, this eternal life? What must we do?
-
-
-
My favorite story about faith is from Mark. chapter 9. Where a father runs up to Jesus and says: If you are able, then help deliver my son from an evil spirit
-
-
I believe, help my unbelief. I believe, but I dont. What he is saying is: I wanna believe, but I can't. Help me
How does Jesus reply on this? Get lost - thats not faith? No he accepts his faith, small as it is.
Faith
-
Even though you think you can't. If you wanna believe in him - you do. Then do as the Father in the story - ask Jesus to help you believe.
-
Believe in him, and you'll have more than any earthly stuff can give you.
-
-
The bread of life dos not perish, but endures for eternal life. And so will you if you believe in him.
