Ms. Constantinidi's MakerSpace
Makerspace Philosophy
The main philosophy of this Makerspace is to create a welcoming environment that focuses heavily on creativity and student-centered learning; creativity and education are not two things that should be separated, they go hand-in-hand. I want education to be engaging and accessible for all students in my Makerspace.
"Junk" Station
At the "junk" station there will be a variety of recycled materials along with hot glue and small squares of card board for students to build and create new things whenever an idea comes to them.
Legos Station
The Lego station in my Makerspace is intended to be an activity thats allows students to be creative. Having a rolling lego cart makes this tool accessible to all students and can be moves around the room for convenience. Using these Legos allow students to gain a better understanding of architecture and allow them to express themselves. Students can use the Lego wall to construct new creations from a birds-eye view; they can make letters, various structures and even some different scenes.

3D Printer
At this station students will be able to use technology to channel their creativity. With the 3D printer opportunities are endless; children can create and construct whatever may come to mind -- this will allow them to practice engineering and building! There will also be cameras/ a green screen which students can use to create short films and also to create stop-motion videos. Students may also use Makey Makey to experiment and discover new ways to use it! Makey Makey works on students STEM skills.
How this can be applied to the classroom
5.L.2.1 Compare the characteristics of several common ecosystems, including estuaries and salt marshes, oceans, lakes and ponds.
"Junk" Center
: At the "junk" center students can find various objects and use them to create their interpretations of an ecosystem of their choice. Their creations with include both living and non-living creatures from that ecosystem.
Legos
: Students can either use items found on the rolling cart or the Lego wall to create a birds-eye-view of an ecosystem of their choice. Students can choose to work individually or in pairs for this activity; this will allow students to interact and familiarize themselves with different parts of an ecosystem.
3D Printer
: In groups, students can use the 3D printer to create a small scale ecosystem that will be assigned to them. Students can then compare and contrast their ecosystem with the other groups in the classroom. This gives students creative freedom while also allowing them to better understand ecosystems.
iPad Apps
: Students can select one app from the stack of "App Task Cards" that will be provided for them on the day of this activity. The apps chosen will allow students to use technology creatively to walk-through and explore ecosystems from their own eyes that they may never get to see in real life. Having this tool will allow students to better understand the ecosystems being discussed in class. Because of limited supplies, students will work in pairs for this activity.
iPads
App/Task Cards
This iPad station includes various activities that students can access on different apps that will be available on the iPads. OSMO is an amazing and interaction program that offers an array of different activities that test students math, spelling, and coding skills. Each month we will have an "App of the Month" which we will then incorporate into our Makerspace tasks. There will also be a separate table with "App Cards" with corresponding "Task Cards" that students can select.

K'NEX Station
Similar to Legos, using the K'NEX construction kit is a beneficial addition to a Makerspace. K'NEX gives students an open-ended construction system in which they can create and build millions of various structures, both big and little. While students can work on this independently, this is a great tool for kids to work on in groups! It encourage students to think creatively and share/build their ideas with other peers.
STEM Station
STEM bin area of my Makerspace will allow for students to learn simple engineering! At this station there will be several different hands-on STEM Bins which are ideal for morning work, centers, to practice fine motor skills, indoor recess, team building among students, or for when a student needs somewhere to calm down. These bins are also a creative and developmentally beneficial way to teach elementary aged children engineering.
