Theoretical Foundations
Location and distance
-
-
Relative space - time, costs
Flows across space
International flows - people, money, knowledge
intra-national scale - govt funding, migration
Place
‘a place is a unique ensemble of physical and human features on the earths surface, including environmental conditions, cultural practices, social life and economic activities’ (Coe et al., 2013)
-
-
Each place is formed of its past and present economic decisions, flows and connections.
-
Scale (Castree et al., 2004)
-
Macroregional (EU, ASEAN)

Territory
If location and distance is about the coordinates on a map and the physical distance that separates them, then territory is about carving out defined proportions of space and exercising power over them (Coe et al., 2013)
Areas can be carved out carved out (economic zones) that have different laws to the rest of the country eg. Ones in china that jumpstarted their economy where taxes may be lower or pollution agreements may be lower
Power to control space, power to agree levels of control over processes within certain boundaries

Uneven development
-
-
Once growth begins to accelerate, it 'sucks in' investment, jobs and money from other areas.
Scale
North America, Japan and Western Europe

Capitalism
Capitalism is defined by private ownership of the means of production - offices, factories and money capital, and the associated need for most people to sell their labour power to employers to earn a wage. This allows them to purchase commodities that are produced by other firms which creates markets which underpins the capitalist system.
