METHOD
Dip the wire into concentrated hydrochloric acid. We do this because there may be metal ion left on the wire.
-
Dip a clean wire into the acid again, then dip it into substance being tested

METHOD CO3
Add a few drops of HCl, look out for bubbles forming
Gas tests

-
Cl2 - Bleaches damp litmus paper, goes from red to white

Cation tests
-
NH4 + (Add dilute sodium hydroxide - old damp red litmus paper over it and it will turn blue if Ammonium is present)
-
-
METHOD
Dilute sodium hydroxide reacts with some metal ions in solution, forming metal hydroxides. Some of these are insoluble, so they appear as precipitates
