Biological Approach
Dement and Kleitman
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
-extraneous variables were controlled as it was done in a sleep lab
-information was withheld to reduce Demand characteristics
-the definition of 'dream' was operationalised as the recollection if they dreamt included content
-use of EGG meant it was
objective
Weaknesses
-artificial setting meant it lacked ecological validity
-small sample (7m 2f -only 5 studied in detail) limits the generalisability
Schachter and Singer
strengths and weaknesses
Strengths
-vast amount of control e.g able to randomly allocate different participants to different conditions, also was able to deceive ppt.
Weaknesses
-lacked ecological validity as we don't normally experience emotions the way they induced them.
-the sample can be criticized as only males which means it wasn't representative
-the study wasn't quite ethical as participants were heavily deceived
Canli et al
strengths and weaknesses
strengths
-It was tested in a standardized environment, means the research had internal validity - researcher can be more confident that there are fewer confounding variables
-vast amounts of quantitative data
-Demand characteristics wasn't possible as the the answers were from the fMRI scanner
Weaknesses
-Sample only consisted of right handed females (10) which meant it wasn't generalisble which reduces validity
-the signals are reduced to the individual, another reason it lacks validity
-
