Focus of learning
learning is subject-centered and focussed on prescribed curricula
Reason for learning
Learners place their trust in the teacher and the efficacy of linear, sequential learning. Learners take little or no responsibility for their learning.
Dependence
The learner is dependent. The teacher determines what,how, where and when anything is learned.
Motivation for learning
Motivation derives from external/extrinsic sources, eg parents, teachers, sense of competition etc.
Role of teacher
Pedagogue- designs the learning process, suggests and provides materials deemed effective at achieving desired outcomes.
Andragogy (Self-Directed Learning)
Focus of learning
Learning is goal-driven, focussing on task which allow cross-disciplinary thinking and autonomy.
Motivation for learning
Motivation is intrinsic-learner enjoy the boost to self-esteem that comes from successfully completing challenges
Reason for learning
Learner seek guidance mentorship but aspire to increase responsibility for the direction of their learning.
Dependence
Learners are independent. They strive for autonomy in learning to arrive at a destination determined by others. They are 'problem solver'.
Role of teacher
Facilitator- sets tasks but encourages diverse routes to solution. Pursues meta-cognition in learner.
Heutagogy (Self-determined learning)
Focus of learning
Learner are enquiry driven- they take a long-term view of their learning, seeking further complexity uncertainty.
Motivation for learning
Motivation lies in experiencing 'flow' and knowing how to learn. Learner seek out unfamiliar situation and the gaining of 'adaptive competencies'
Reason for learning
Learner is not necessarily sequential or linear. Learner accept full responsibility for their welcoming challenge and serendipity
Role of teacher
Coach-bring together opportunity, context external, relevance and extended complexity. Foster a culture of collaboration and curiosity.
Dependence
The leaner are 'problem-finders'. They know their destination and become interdependent on those who can help them dtermine the route.
