        If an evidence item has been damaged or does not bare microscopic marks, it is considered unsuitable for identification.
        
        The AFTE defines an elimination as "a significant disagreement of discernable class characteristics and/or individual characteristics." An elimination is most often decided because of the differences in class characteristics. However, an elimination based off of individual characteristics can occur but is much more complex.
      - An inconclusive identification may have agreement of all class characteristics and some matching of individual characteristics but not a sufficient amount, it may have matching class characteristics but no matching individual characteristics due to the lack there of, or it may have agreement of class characteristics but disagreement of individual characteristics.
