poverty and diet and nutrition
the definition of poor nutrition
Nutrition is the intake of food, considered in relation to the body’s dietary needs. Good nutrition – an adequate, well balanced diet combined with regular physical activity – is a cornerstone of good health.
Millions of people are eating the wrong sorts of food for good health. Eating a diet that is low in whole grains, fruit, nuts and seeds and fish oils and high in salt raises the risk of an early death
association
Not just in the perennial famine areas but also in comparatively rich countries like Nigeria and India - both of which feature in our children's suppers survey - where close to 50 per cent of under-fives are so malnourished that their growth is stunted.
Poverty is an undeniably significant factor in child malnutrition, but in many high-burden countries, malnutrition rates are much higher than in other countries with similar national income. At the household level, in many countries malnutrition rates are surprisingly high even in the wealthiest quintile of households. These facts indicate that concerted efforts must be taken to reduce malnutrition; income growth does not automatically solve the problem.
Economic growth alone does not solve malnutrition.(the world bank, 2019)
examples
200 million children across the world are suffering from chronic or acute malnutrition. That includes one third of all the children in sub-Saharan Africa - a figure that has hardly changed in 20 years.
According to the UN agencies, 13 million children will die this year of easily preventable diseases, all of whose effects are exacerbated, or made lethal, by poor nutrition.(Guardian, 2019)
