Lunch/Recess: Student typically move from recess in the gym to lunch in the cafeteria, or vice versa.
Physical Accessibility
-
-
Narrow hallways and stairwells, not sufficient space for 2 classes passing each other at once
-
Elevator available from first floor down to the cafeteria level - not from levels which have classrooms and does not go to the gym
Tables in cafeteria are low to the ground and close together, making it difficult to leave tables when others are around.
Calendar posters on walls in cafeteria with breakfast and lunch menus are in English and Spanish , making this information more accessible to students and their families who are bilingual or ELL's.
Garbage and recycling cans line the middle of the cafeteria in between two floor to ceiling pillars, making it difficult to navigate for students carrying trays of food and even more so, for handicapped individuals.
-
Restroom: There is only one restroom for one person in the in the indoor gym and the size of the toilet is not suitable for younger kids to use.
Social Accessibility
Sport games can, if implemented properly, encourage teamwork
Free seating at lunch - allows students to socialize with peers of their choice (decreases probability of negative peer interactions), however this also easily leaves space for students to be socially excluded
Students frequently excluded from recess activities - no processes in place to include all students in social activities
