Energy
Definition- Energy helps for things to work and have a high power to get things moving.
Different Types of Energy
Kinetic Energy-Energy of movement
Heat Energy- Can come from the sun, flames, chemical reactions, electric devices, people and animals.
Light energy- Energy that air has when it is vibrating.
Electrical Energy- Produced by power stations, solar cells, batteries and lightning. Electrical energy produces power for appliances that you may need or want to use.
Potential Energy- This type of energy is sored for later use. It provides the potential for an object to move, make sound an do exercise.
4 Types of Potential Energy
Gravitational Potential Energy- Energy is stored in am object in a distance above the Earth's surface.
Chemical Potential Energy- Energy stored in substances.
Elastic Potential Energy- Energy stored in a stretched or squashed head spring.
Nuclear Potential Energy- Energy stored inside the tiny atoms that make up matter, found in nuclear reactions like the sun.
Energy Transfer- This is when energy is passed from one object to another.
Kinetic Energy isn't the only energy that can be transferred. Heat energy can be transferred through the three different process methods.
Conduction
This happens between two objects that are in contact.
Convection
Heat can flow through liquids and gases in the process of convection.
Radiation
Heat radiates or spreads outwards from any hot object.
Energy Transformations- Energy can be transformed from one type of energy into another type of energy.
The Law of Conservation of Energy- At times it can look like energy disappears this is not true. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. This means that:
Energy might be passed on or wasted but it is never lost.
If one object wastes energy, then it is gained by another object usually HEAT.
Energy Efficiency- Most energy conversions waste some energy. This wasted energy is usually released into heat sometimes sound.
All devices require some form of energy to operate this is called INPUT ENERFY. OUTPUT ENERGY is useful energy. Energy efficiency is a measure of how much input energy is converted to output energy.
When there is a lot of useful output energy and not much input energy, the device is ENERGY EFFICIENT.
Energy Rating Labels- Household appliances vary in the energy efficiency. Appliances that are mane efficient will save energy and reduce running costs.
Blue Labels indicate Cooling
Red Labels indicate Heating
Yellow sections of the labels shows capacity you put and power input.
Light Wave- Light travels at about 300 million meters per second.
Electromagnetic Radiation- Name given to the energy released from the sun.
Dispersion of Light- Visible light is part of the larger EMS but visible light is made up of the spectrum too.
What Happen to Light Energy- There are three things that happen to it:
Transmitted through a substance
Reflected from the surface
Absorbed into the sunstance
Refraction of light is the bend of light.
The eye- The eye is made up of a convex le se that forms an image
Shorts- sighted- This happens when your eye is to long and the light is focus either before or after the retina
Long-sighted- This happens when your eye is to short and the light is focused either before or after the retina.
Sound Waves- Sound is a type of energy produced by vibrations.
What Happens to Sound Energy?- As a sound waves travels through a material, the particles of that material vibrate.
Reflection of Sound- An echo is a reflected sound wave.
