FOLIC ACID DEFICIENCY ANAEMIA
DEFINATION
It is decreased in red blood cells due to the lack of folate which is a type B vitamin
CAUSES
To little folic acid in the diet
long term alcoholism
hemolytic anaemia
MANIFASTATIONS
Weakness
Diarrhoea
A sore red tongue
Listlessness
DIAGNOSTIC STUDIES
Physical Examination
Positive Sickling test
Low Hb of 4 to 5mg dl
Low WBC and low platelets
DIET
Eat green leaf vegetable and liver
Eat plenty of folate rich foods
NURSING INTERVENTIONS
Administering folic acid supplements as prescribed
Refer patient to nutritonist
Encourage Heath living
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Folate is present within the plasma and is loosely with plasma albumin in circulation
5 MethyTHFA enters the cell via a diverse range of folate transporters with different affinities
The active form participating in folate dependent enzymatic reaction
Cobalamin(B12) is required in these conversion and in its absence folate is trapped
From than folate is trapped to participate in metabolic anaemia results
