roots in the medieval times

started in the church with passionplay these were later performed at the Marketplace.

15 century the plays started to be accompanied by Music, singing and dancing.

In the 16 century woman first started to play woman roles.

Performers were just respectable Folks.

In the 18 century Plays were often banned.

Next to the passionplay a lot of other priest Plays were invented.

15 century recovery of the ancient time Drama.

1584 start of the Austrian baroque Theater.

Under Maria Theresia the court theater wasnt used anymore for plays. But she build the Palace Theater in Schönbrunn. In the begining the plays were just for the noble but not anymore.

Maria Theresia rebuild the Castle Theater for the Citizen.

The opera texts were just for several different social Levels or ethic Groups, so they tried to make textes that speak to more social classes.

The National socialist(1938)put for them acceptable artists as directors and actors.That´s why the Drama in Austria couldn´t express itself anymore. In this time a lot of Theaters were destroyed.

In the late 60s avant garde platforms were invented.

In the late 70s and 80s small and medium sized theatre got popular, such as the Komödianten(Comedians), Schauspielhaus(playhouse).
