Goal Setting
Can be used to
Motivate to performers
Example : Weightlifter goal of completing one additional rep

Adhere to exercise
Example : Attending training session can hit a target weight loss

SMART
Achievable
Goals should be realistic and within performers capability
For example, scoring a goal in the first half is achievable whereas scoring a hatrick isn't
Recorded
Measurements should be logged to track progress
Also adapt to training programmes and future goals to suit progress
Example, recording each number sets and reps each session to ensure progress
Measurable
Goals should be assessed to know how performer has done
Coach should be able to measure how many times gymnast completes cartwheel
Timed
Short term goals are achievable
Lead up to long term goals
Example, one week goal for training to improve sprint start technique
Specific
Goal should be clear and focused
Example performer trying to lose 2cm from waist after 6 weeks

External imagery
Picturing yourself doing activity outside your body
Example, racing driver imagining driving course from outside the car
Internal imagery
Imagining yourself doing the activity
Example, gymnast imagining themselves doing their routine
Selective attention
Ignores distraction
Example, golfer trie to filter the noise from the crowd and focus on the ball
Performer concentrates on relevant information
Mental rehearsal
Forms mental image of skill about to be performed
Can help learn a new skill, improve skills and control anxiety
Going through activity on your mind
Positive thinking
Used to increase self confidence about future events
Performers talk to themselves or think positively about past performances

Gives feeling of movement, relax or pleasure
Example, footballer pictures the corner he will shoot at before he takes a free kick
