Lymphatic/ Immune System Destiny Espitia Per.5
Major Functions:
Immune System
: Functions as body defense against infectious pathogens
Lymphatic System Function:
Return clean fluids & leaked proteins back to the blood
Drain excess fluid from tissue
*Play essential role in body defense & resistance to disease
Innate/ Natural immune defenses
Innate (non-specific) defenses
: respond rapidly// "born w/it) "
include species resistance, mechanical barriers, chemical barriers, natural killer cells, inflammation, phagocytosis, fever
Adaptive (Specific) defenses:
develop slowly (takes time) , "body learns" during lifetime, carried out by lymphocytes that recognize a specific invader
Innate (nonspecific) defenses:
1.
species resistance:
species is resistant to diseases that affect other species 2.
Mechanical Barriers:
Body's 1st line of defense, rest of innate defenses part of 2nd line of defense 3.
Chemical Barriers
: highly acidic & caustic environment provided by gastric juice, lysozyme in tears, kills many pathogens 4.
Natural Killers Cells:
secretes chemicals that enhance inflammation
5. Inflammation:
increase blood volume in affected areas
Adaptive (specific) defenses:
AKA IMMUNITY ( Acquired Immunity) bodys 3rd line of defense// response mounted by bodys against specific recognized foreign molecules
Anatomy of Lymphatic System:
Thymus:
secretes hormones called thymosins, which regulate of T lymphocyte development
Nodes:
Contain both lymphocyte & macrophages which clean lymph as H flows through the nod// covered w/ C.T that extends inside node and divides it into nodules & spaces called sinuses
Spleen
: contains blood instead of lymph// composed of white pulp and red pulp// filters blood & removes damaged blood cells and bacteria
Adaptive/Acquired Immune Defenses
Adaptive (specific) defenses
: AKA Immunity (acquired Immunity): body's 3rd line of defense
Response mounted by body against specific recognized foreign molecules
Humoral vs. Cellular Response
Antibody-mediated immune response is also called humoral immune system
Activated T Cells interact directly w/ antigen receptor become activated
2 Type of Adaptive Defense: Humoral immunity and cell mediated immunity
Antigen and Antibodies
Antigens
: proteins, polysaccharides, glycolipids that can elictah immune response// anything that can cause an immune response
Antibodies:
soluble protein secreted by plasma cells
Disorders of the Immune System
