Lymphatic/ Immune System Yaritza Perez P.5
Major Functions
Lymphatic system
help body get rid of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials
transport lymph through out the body
immune system
body's defense against infectious pathogens
keeps pathogens out and attacks those that enter the body
Anatomy of Lymphatic system
lymph- fluid
Edema- condition that interferes with the flow in lymph will result in edema
lymph nodules
lymphatic organs- lymph nodes, thymus, spleen
Lymph Nodes- lymphocytes & macrophages
thymus- secretes hormones called thymosins which regulates of T lymphocyte development
Spleen- filters the blood cells & bacteria
Bone Marrow- site of blood cells & immature lymphocytes formation & B lymphocyte or B cell maturation
innate/ natural immunity
species resistance
mechanical barriers
chemical barriers
Natural Killer cells
inflammation
phagocytes
fever
adaptive / acquired defenses
body's 3rd line of defense
response mounted by the body against specific recognized foreign moles
antigens
humoral vs cellular response
antigen presenting cell
major histocompatibility complex
cellular immune response or cell mediated
secrete cytokines
helper t cells stimulates B cells to produce antibodies for the displayed antigen
cytotoxic t cells
memory t cells
Humoral immune response
most B cells need helper T cells for activation
the helper T cell releases cytokines that activate the cell
plasma cells & antibodies
respond to future encounters with the antigens
antibody- mediated immune also called humoral immune response
Antigens & Antibodies
soluable protein secreted by plasma cells that are derived from B cells
carried by body fluids, capable of binding specifically to antigens
IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD, IgE
Disorders of the immune system
AIDS
SCID
smoking. alcohol and poor nutrition
