Greenhouse Effect
Greenhouse Gases
CO2 is released from combustion (fossil fuels etc.)
Methane is produced by animals such as cattle (flatulence)
Methane is trapped under ice and as ice caps melt it is released at an increasing rate
Deforestation reduces photosynthesis so less CO2 is taken from atmosphere
Increasing populations need more food so more cattle is reared
Consequences of Global Warming
If sea levels rise we will lose habitats for animals and farming
If the weather becomes colder/hotter or dryer/wetter animals may become extinct
If seasons change animal migrations could be altered
Increasing temperatures:
Ice Caps can melt causing sea levels to rise
Sea water heats up and expands causing sea levels to rise
Climate change leading to changes in our weather patterns
The Greenhouse Effect
Solar Radiation powers climate system
Some solar radiation us reflected by the atmosphere into space
Half of this solar radiation is absorbed by the Earth's surface
Infared radiation is emitted from the Earth's surface
Some Infrared passes through the atmosphere
Most Infrared is absorbed by the atmosphere and re-emitted in all directions by greenhouse gas molecules
This warms the Earth's surface and lower atmosphere - Average surface temperature increases
Greenhouse Gases = CO2 and Methane
