Tectonic Hazard - Pakistan
causes
the Euroasian plate and the Indian plate met at a collision plate boundary which runs through the middle of Pakistan
the area is very prone to seismic activity which is why the Himalayan fold mountain range formed
the built up strains were suddenly released creating a powerful earthquake
data
8th of October 2005
Kashmir, Pakistan
7.6 on the moment magnitude scale
consequences
80 000 deaths, mostly from collapsed buildings
thousands injured
hundreds of thousands of building were damaged or destroyed causing 3 million people to become homeless
water pipelines and electricity lines were damaged and broken, cutting off supply
landslides buried people and buildings blocking access to roads and cutting off water supplies, electricity supplies and telephone lines
unclean water caused diseases like diarrhoea to be spread easily
freezing conditions after the earthquake caused more difficulties in the process of rescue and rebuilding
education was negatively affected as school were destroyed and were not rebuilt quickly
responses
other countries --> International aid + equipment (helicopters, rescue dogs) + teams of people
help from other countries didn't reach some areas for days and week, therefore many had to be rescued by hand without any equipment or help from emergency services
distribution --> tents + blankets + medical supplies (but did not reach most areas)
40 000 people from a destroyed town were relocated
government money was given to the people to rebuild their homes, but many used them to buy food...after 3 years many people were still living in tents
aid was given to rebuild the schools, but some school were still not rebuilt after 10 yr causing pupils to be taught outside
