it's a portait of the contemporary english society
he describes nobility, various members of the clergy that he subtly ctitices and the middle class
CHARACTERISATION
realism is widely used differently from the poery of the time
the characters are called by their profession which symbolizes of important one's profession was to their place in society
satire, exaggeration and caricature are key-elements in chaucer's way of calling out character's flaws
THEME
the main theme is the jouney which is a metaphor for the course of life
CHAUCER AND WOMEN
in the prologue where he introduces the characters he mixes men and women
this shows the new importance of women and how indipendent the women around the author were
