Key Concepts of Biology
Magnification
When converting from a smaller unit to a bigger unit you have to divide. For e.g cm - m /100
When converting from a bigger unit to a smaller unit you multiply for e.g m - cm x100
Actual size = image/magnification
mm - um divide 1000
Magnification = eye piece lens x objective lens
Animal Cells
Cytoplasm - Where chemical reactions take place ; contains enzymes
Cell membrane - Controls what goes in and out
Nucleus - Has genetic material which is arranged into chromosomes. Also controls activities
Mitochondria - Where aerobic respiration happens
Ribosomes - Translation of genetic material in synthesis of protein
Plant cells
Large Vacuole - Contains cell sap ; maintains internal pressure
Chloroplast - Where photosynthesis takes place, contains chlorophyll
Cell wall - supports cell ; made of cellulose
Oxygen + Glucose ---> Carbon Dioxide + Water
Plant cells have the same features but have 3 more
Sperm
Acrosome - stores enzymes to digest enzymes
Middle section contains mitochondria where respirations occurs
Has a head
Tail to swim
Has a streamline shape
Has a nucleus
Egg Cell
Cell membrane which fuses with sperm
Cell membrane becomes hard to stop more sperm
Has a jelly coat to ensure only one sperm enters the egg
Has cytoplasm to feed embryo
Bacteria
Plasmid DNA - Small loops of DNA ; plasmids contain genes
Chromosomal DNA ; Controls cell activities
Flagellum - Rotates to move
