USA
The slogan "No taxation without representation" originates from the American Revolution
--> many in the 13 colonies believed that, as they were not directly represented in the British Parliament, any laws it passed affecting the colonists were illegal under the Bill of Rights 1689, and were a denial of their rights as Englishmen.
-led to the Revelutionary War 1775-1783
-Decleration of Independence: July 4, 1776
--> The Constitution was signed in 1787 --> established America’s national government and fundamental laws, and guaranteed certain basic rights for its citizens
-*Manifest Destiny -was a belief in US that the settlers was destined to expand to the rest of the country, across the North America
-Slavery: 1619
--> Jamestown, Virginia first slavestate (Named after Queen Elizabeth, Virgin Queen)
-Lasted Until 1865 (250 years)
-The Civil War 1861-1865
--> North VS South
-in South the economy is based on agriculture --> workers on the cotton fields
-in North the economy was based on industry- didn't need slavery
-South seceded from the union (left)
--> "The Confederate States"- didn't want to be a part of the country
-Pres. Lincoln --> abolished slavery and kept the union as a whole by fighting against "The confederate States"
In the Constitution --> no equality between white and blacks: 1 Slave = 3/5 person
1863 --> Included the Emancipation Proclamation - statement against slavery
--> Gave the Union a unifying cause
Had to change the constitution:
--> 13th Amendment: abolish slavery/ involuntary servitude
exept if convicted of a crime (chain gang)
--> 14th: gave citizenship to all persons born in the US/ equal protection under the law
--> 15th: black men right to vote
--> lots of African Americans arrested for small crimes to provide labour*
--> colonized by Britain, France and Spain (important)
--> take resources from the colonies, producing products in Britain and selling it back to the colonies (mercantilism)
--> earning money
--> Spanish missionaries
-Dutch merchants and French fur traders
-English planters and German farmers settled
-all with different ideas about how they wanted to live
-Immigrants contributed to what is today's America
--> different cultural values have formed each state
-many conflicts between different groups
--> Native Americans: territory and treaties
--> British Crown: government and taxes
--> Spanish and French: colonial holdings
--> disputes about Slavery
After independence from Britain --> how to run the country
