Islam beliefs and teachings
The nature of Allah
TAWHID: the oneness of God. Everything links back to the idea that there is one God. In the Qur'an it says "there is no God except him"
Qualities of God
Immanent: Allah works inside the universe (such as revealing to Muhammad the Qur'an)
Transcendent: Beyond/outside the universe (he created the universe so must be outside it)
Omnibenevolent: All loving
Omnipotent: All powerful
Merciful: Always forgives
Fair: Always fair
Just: Always does what is right
Adalat in Shi'a Islam
Adalat (justice of God) is particularly important in Shi'a Islam. Humans are affected by emotions and so can do what is unfair, Allah never does
Prophethood (risalah)
Rishalah: belief in prophets as messengers of God. Starting with Adem, ending with Muhammad
Prophets communicate with Allah. He has chosen them to teach people about God, but the message was always changed or mistaken through history. This is why Muhammad is the final and greatest prophet, his message was uncorrupted as it was written down in the Qur'an
Why are the prophets important??
Prophets are humans carrying God's message
Many prophets are from the Jewish and Christian religion
Because of the mistakes made there needed to be a final revelation
Muhammad is known as the "seal of prophets" because he closed off the messages, he received the final and absolute word
Malaikah (angels)
Angels are heavenly beings
They were Allah's first creation
They are made of light
They don't have free will. They are Allah's messengers and must do what he says
They are often invisible but can take many forms, they are described as having wings
They are mentioned in the Qur'an
The angel Jibreiel gives Muhammad the Qur'an
They are immortal
The important angels in Islam
Jibriel (Gabriel): he gave the Qur'an to Muhammad
Mika'il (Micheal): keeps the devil out of heaven and brings rain for crops
Israfil (Raphael): will announce Judgement day by blowing a trumpet
Jinns
They were Allah's second creation
They also have free will (like humans), so can disobey Allah
They test humans by helping them do good, or trick them to evil
The devil, Ibis is a jinn
They are made from smokeless fire
Akhira (afterlife)
Muslims believe in the afterlife. There are several beliefs that work together
Al-Qadr (predestination)
This means Allah pre-determines everything (he knows everything, he has a plan for the universe)
Everything is part of his plan
This is because he is omniscient (all-knowing)
Free-will
Human have free will
We should live a good life and follow Allah's rules as a test
Even though Allah knows the future, we are free to choose it. This is because Allah knows every possible outcome
We are not puppets, like angels
God will judge us on our decisions
Humans have a roug (soul)
Allah gave humans a conscience to help them do what is right
Judgement day
When we die we will be resurrected on judgement day and judged on our life
The angels Raqib and Atid record all our life and we will be questioned on our decisions and intentions
If our good deeds outweigh our bad we go to heaven, if not we go to hell
Heaven (Janna)
A beautiful place with everything we could possibly want
On Judgement day Isafil wil blow his trumpet and the souls that have been waiting will be judged. Angels will ask them to say the first pillar of Islam, and who their God and Prophet are. If they answer correctly they will be taken to Heaven. If you die before Judgement day you go to a place called bazarkh where your soul waits
Heaven is a reward for living a good live or fighting for your religion
Hell (Jahannam)
Hell is a place of torture, smoke and fire. People are physically tortured, but also suffer because they are not with God
Some Muslims believe if your intentions in life were good you will only go there for a short time
The dead will go to hell after judgement day. Before this their souls will be in waiting
It is a punishment fir those who fail the test of life
We can avoid it by following God's teachings in the Qur'an
Kutubs
The Qur'an is the perfect word of God. There have been other prophets in Islam who also had messages from God. Even though these were corrupted they are still important. Other religions sacred books deserve respect, but cannot be trusted like the Qur'an.
Tawrat (the torah) - given to Moses, it is the holy book of Judaism. It teaches about the oneness of God
Zabur (the psalms) - these were given to David. They are part of the Jewish holy book and the Christian bible. They praise God and teach how to fast
Jnjil (the gospel) - the teachings of Jesus, part of the Bible. They show how to live a loving life of kindness to others
Sunni and shi'a Islam
The two biggest groups of Muslim are Sunni (the largest) and Shi'a (second largest). The two split after the death of Muhammad
