Atrial Septal Defect
-
Causes
-
Diseases such as diabetes, lupus, and rubella
-
-
Diagnostic Purposes
Chest Roentgenogram: Reveals pulmonary vascular markings, right atrial and ventricularenlargement and dilation of pulmonary artery
Imaging: Use of echocardiographic findings that reveals right chamber enlargement and evidence of ventricular volume overload
-
Phatophysiology
Larger defects are associated with substantial shunting which may lead to volume overload of right atrium, right ventricle, and pulmonary arteries.
If left untreated it may result in pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular failure, decreased right ventricular compliance and potentially right to left shunting
-
Treatment
Anticoagulants: Warfarin, heparin
Diuretics: Lasix, aldactone
Beta blockers: Acebutolol, Atenolol, propranolol
